MAINTENANCE OF MICROSCOPE
 
 

Like every precision mechanical product, microscopes will last longer and provide better performance if cleaned and lubricated at regular intervals. The actual work involved is simple and not so time-consuming. After long use of the instrument, overhauling, cleaning and lubricating are required, and major defects come from forced movement especially when grease dried or fixed dirt on the slide way surfaces between coarse adjustment metal and fine adjustment block, eventually wear out the teeth of the gears until no movement.

 

 

 

Optical Maintenance

After long use of your microscope, lens are covered by fixed dust, dirt and film and under the worst condition, such as high humidity, the inner lens surfaces may get moldy.
However, the surfaces with bacteria grown are already eroded in the glass materials and cannot be cleaned or re-ground by your hands and should be returned to the manufacturer. Optical glasses are generally softer than window glass so gentle touch is required. In many cases lens are cemented with adhesive materials, so too much use of solvent materials is not good. If you wish to attempt to take lens-element or lens group apart from the frame, after cleaning they should be returned to the correct place in order, but this is allowed only for eyepieces and not for the objectives.

 

 

 

 

 

Eyepieces

Tilt the eyepiece toward a good light. You can readily observe any dirt and film that may be on outer surfaces, and inner surface dirt can be readily observed looking through beneath side from field lens. Loosen dirt with camel-hair brush, and blow it off with blower. If oil or other grease film remains, spray distilled water and wipe off with lens paper or clean lint-free clothe. If film persists spray very little of xylene to lens paper or cloth and wipe off promptly. Circular motion should be applied for cleaning and polishing. You can determine the necessity of cleaning inner surfaces by focusing the microscope on a specimen and rotating the eyepiece. If dust and dirt spots rotate, cleaning is required. Unscrew lower and upper lens (Fig.1) elements and clean as described for outer surfaces.

 

 

 

 

 

Objectives

Take apart objectives from nosepiece, and clean the exposed front surfaces of all objectives as you did in case of eyepiece lens, however, the back lens can not be cleaned easily as you do to the front surface, because the back lens usually located in the deep position though narrow hole, only skilled repairman or the manufacturer can do it. The separation of each lens-element or lens-group should never be done by your hands, but should be returned to the skilled repairman or the manufacturer, otherwise poor re-assembly of lens after separation decreases optical performance until almost no use. Please understand that lens assembly needs very professional skill to get best performance.
Usually, lens surfaces of the objectives are smaller than eyepieces, for checking dirt or crack on the surface is recommended to use a magnifying glass.
In some cases, higher power objectives such as 40x and 100x oil objectives, top lens is made of very soft glass, so clean these objectives meticulously.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Condenser

For the Abbe condenser, take apart iris diaphragm unit from condenser, clean the top lens front surface and back surface of the field lens.

 

 

 

 

Mirror

Mirror surfaces should be cleaned with distilled water or xylene. Spray a little of the liquids and always wipe dry promptly.

水銀灯(수은등)

 

형광현미경(蛍光顕微鏡)의 조명(照明)으로 많이 쓰인다.

전구를 다룰때 절대 손으로 만져서는 안된다.  손으로 직접 만지면 자국이 남아서, 변색의 원인이 되므로 에테르(エーテル) 등으로 꼭 닦아두어야 한다.

 

수은등은 사용시 상당한 열을 발생하지만, 현미경의 특성상 냉각팬을 설치할 수 없기에 자연 통풍 구조로 되어 있다.   환기 부분을 손으로 만지면 화상의 위험이 있기 때문에 절대 주의해야 한다.

 

수은등은 일반 조명과는 달리 밝기 조절이 안되므로 형광 현미경을 사용시에는 필터를 이용해서 조명을 조절한다.

 

빛은 절대로 직접 육안으로 보면 안된다.  망막에 손상(網膜はくり)을 입게 되므로 절대 주의해야 한다.

대부분의 형광현미경은 경통 부분에 오렌지색의 차단막이 있어서 불필요한 빛으로 부터 보호한다.

 

조명의 중심맞추기(照明の心だし) 작업때는 먼저 흰 종이를 스테이지에 놓고 조명을 조절한다.
